7 Things to know for your first bodybuilding competition

7 Things to know for your first bodybuilding competition

Are you thinking of doing a body building show? Here are the best steps to getting started.

Be mentally prepared

If it’s your first-time, second time; however many times you have competed, you still have to be mentally prepared. The preparation process for each competition is different to your last. If its your first ever time EVER then you need to know these steps!

Create your team of specialised professionals

  • Personal Trainer
  • Nutritionist / dietician
  • Posing coach
  • Professional tanner
  • Outfit 'wardrobe fitter'
  • DJ - find a DJ that specialize in remixes "Music routine"

Once you've sorted and have found yourself a support team of specialised professionals, make sure you get a training coach that has dealt with athletes in this field and has a great track record with bodybuilders.

Your coach will have to be a sports specific specialist! Remember that - They could be the best nutritionist / dietian out there - but you need to trust a professional that is sports-specific regardless of what you choose to compete in.

Choose your best category

Find a class that you want to go into – and as a reminder that every federation has different set of rules to know for each class type. Bodybuilding classes can be:

  • Bikini
  • Boardshorts
  • Classic physique
  • Bodybuilding
  • Figure
  • Masters’ bodybuilding
  • Fitness model
  • etc…

Your coach will guide you and direct you to the right class, depending how you look. Your coach's opinion is a critical step to your success - you may have a class in mind but if your shape looks better in a certain class, your coach should give you advice to enter there as you will have a better chance to place in that class.

Be ready for Registration Day

On the day they will need your height – weight – outfit – payment – music and they will hand out your competitor’s number, before or on briefing day, depending on the federation. The registration team will ask you if it’s on stage or off-stage routine so make sure your music is ready. It is a 1-minute routine so be sure you’re READY, your coach will explain more of the ins and outs on the day!

Important - The Briefing

The judges will explain to you on show day what your need to do, make sure that you’re listening when you’re at briefing. They will run through the back stage rules and competition regulations, so make sure you are on time.

Compulsories - Posing

  • Bikini
  • Boardshorts
  • Classic physique
  • Bodybuilding
  • Female Figure Bodybuilding
  • Masters’ Bodybuilding
  • Fitness model
  • etc…

When your class is called out, you will start with the individual compulsories 'posing' in the class line up. These are normally:

Front pose, side pose, back pose again - depending on the federation.
